It is the age old deception. You are the center of it all. All that matters is you. After all, does not God love you? Are you not the object of his affection?
One cannot deny the unfathomable love of God for his people. “For God so loved...he gave his only son..” (John 3:16). Without question, we are the object of God’s gaze. God’s affection is not in question. It is OUR affection that is in question.
Paul tells us in Romans that man has no excuse not to acknowledge and love God. God has exhibited love, care, and existence through all of His creation. He has shown his magnificent power and wisdom. However, people did not want to give God that place and power, so they began to worship stuff they made or worship creation itself.
That is “the lie”. It is slippery because there is great appreciation for what has been made and it even will cloak itself in a kind of god-likeness because it may even want to conserve God’s great creation. However, at the core of this value is still man. It is all about man and his ability and man’s great worth: It is a value that does not ultimately bow its knee to Jesus.
It is the lie. In the garden, Eve succumbed to the pitch: “YOU will be like God…” The center of this is “the lie” that leads to chaos and social breakdown. Paul lists the things that come out of the “Me” generation: Men wanting men and women wanting women, sexual immorality, hate, murder, pride, strife, greed…and the list goes on.
Many people may not locate themselves on that list. However, the church, to some degree, has traded its moral power to change people by the power of the Holy Ghost, to issues which are not evil but are not our primary calling. We can help the poor, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, save the whales, stop global warming and still be a part of “the lie”. The reason we can do this and still be a part of “the lie” is because all of this can be done by a kind of moral person without Jesus Christ. The cause of Christ transcends compassionate impressive deeds. We are called to transform people by the glory and power of the Holy Spirit and for them to become radical worshipers of Jehovah God through the Blood of Jesus! “The lie” is difficult to catch sometimes because sin can be so beautiful and noble. Satan loves to take good things and make it a cause for man to appear so good and give no glory to God.
The gospel is not just about doing good. It is about a person being transformed by the cleansing of his sin and then giving his full devotion, energy, and passion in loving the Father. Out of this love comes the actions that change other people. This action is empowered by the Holy Spirit and will always lead others to acknowledge the greatness of Jesus and our creator God rather than applauding the person that gave them a biscuit.
It is not about us. It is not about the world, the trees, our human kindness, health care, our bodies, etc…It will always and forever be about him…about Jesus!
